Session 22

The party start tracking the second group of greys that split from the main camp through the jungle. When they catch up with them they discover the greys have made camp on top of a small mesa rising out of the trees. Sassani flies to the top of the tree line on her broom to survey the top, but isn't quite able to see what's going on.

The group find a small path winding up the side of the mesa and sneak up it, launching a devastating surprise attack on the greys. Before they can all be cut down Wei, realising he can communicate with them, starts bargaining with one. They grey he is speaking to convinces the remaining ones to lay down their weapons, and the five survivors (names here) pledge allegiance to Wei because he's obviously tougher than them.

Chae-rin uses her dark magic to steal the identity of one of the dead and begins rifling through it's memory, and pretending to be it to it's remaining companions to pump more information from them. Between Chae-rin and Wei the group discovers that the greys refer to themselves as Yugs. They believe all of the greys to be different types of the same species, calling the taller grey that had been assassinated a Yugoloth, the smaller, more aggressive ones Yuglings and the more brutish stupid ones Yuggernauts. The Yugs say they are subservient to the Yugoloth, and have been ordered through the gate to this world at their behest to take over. They have travelled a long way through the cave to get here. They seem subservient to anyone more powerful than them, and content to obey Wei's commands.

Whilst investigating the rest of the top of the mesa the group discovers a staircase leading down into it's centre. At the bottom is a single room, containing six pillars, a single, large, stone statue, and a sarcophagus. Sensing a trap, Wei canvasses the room before touching anything, and comes to the conclusion that the tile immediately inside the door is the trigger. He suspects that this will trigger the door to slam shut, and that the statue will likely animate. He reports back to the rest of the group, and they prepare their descent.

Instructing the Yugs to remain on top of the mesa, the group descends. Wei and Sassani go into the room under Invisibility on Sassani's broom, trying to work out how to trigger the trap. Kathra remains immediately outside with Chae-rin and Ryo, with the plan to use Shape Earth to remove the door if it should slam shut. After poking and prodding for a few minutes Wei and Sassani can't see how to trigger the trap, so step onto the raised dias with the sarcophagus, of course then setting it off.

They were partially correct in their assessment of the trap. A giant stone slab falls to block off the door and the statue in the centre of the room creaks slowly to life, but in addition two more stone warriors emerge from the columns closest to the door and guard the entrance. Additionally, outside the door, the stairs leading down all fold flat, creating a slide down into the room. Wei leaps to attack the statue as Kathra blasts the door open, but no-one is quite ready for how powerful the statue is and it splats Wei quite convincingly into the floor. Rather than help, Sassani flees the room to the others. Kathra blockades the door so the stone warriors cannot escape, and Sassani, Ryo and Chae-rin begin casting from behind her.

Halfway through the fight one of the Yugs comes sliding down the stairs from above, knocking into Chae and narrowly avodiing Ryo. He is followed by a jumble of rocks, which everyone at the bottom are pelted by. The Yug claims to have been investigating the stairs when they changed under him, but the party aren't convinced. Chae-rin attempts to use her summoned constrictor to manoeuver back up the stairs, but is hit by more rocks halfway and forced back to the bottom.

Wei's body is bought back from the brink by Kathra and Ryo's magic, but without backup from his team Wei is repeatedly mashed by the giant stone warrior. Chae-rin is eventually able to bring it down through judicious use of Shatter, but this almost causes the roof to cave in on them as well. Wei is finally recovered, though he has left many bloody smears on the floor of the room.

The party takes stock of their situation, temporarily trapped underground in the tomb.
